Okay so I want to do a monthly email of things I have been interested in/enjoying, sort of a curation, if you will. Im excited to share with you and also remind myself to stay inspired! XOXO ryn
Dorothy Ashby and The Harp
I listened to jazz harpist, Dorothy Ashby, for the first time this month and was hooked. I particularly loved The Rubáiyát of Dorothy Ashby (1970) and Hip Harp (1958). One of my friends plays the harp and has been giving me beginner lessons, and it sounds sooo magical.
Utamaro
Stumbled upon some Utamaro prints at the Met a few years ago, and have been obsessed ever since. I did more of a deep dive this month and even made a few of his prints my phone wallpaper. I would describe his subject matter as “beautiful women doing things,” or as the Japanese say “Bijin-ga.”
Vivienne Westwood AW1995 “Vive la Cocotte”
Vivienne Westwood sadly passed away at the end of last month, and this is basically just a little ode to my favorite collection of hers. Models wore padded garments that drastically accentuated their physique— a complete rejection of the conventional ‘90s stick figure models. I’m also obsessed with the collision of historical references (1950s bullet bras with 1850s crinolines??) in this show that feels over the top, but just right, because it’s Vivienne. And Kate Moss carried a bunny down the runway :0
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)
A group of college girls go missing in the year 1900, and it’s ephemeral and haunting! And very Australian. Yayy
Email subscriptions to newsletters, articles and essays
I deleted Twitter in early December and needed a new way to fuel my desire for constant consumption. It has made my inbox a little chaotic. My favorites are The Face, After School, Vogue Runway, The Audacious Roundup, and Back Row. If anyone else has any other suggestions lmk!
